Care of Disks

HANDLING DISKS

Disks are fragile. Handle them carefully. Never touch the exposed portion of the disk. Do not expose them to excessive heat, direct sunlight, dust or moisture. Do not write on the disk label with a ballpoint pen. Do not try to clean a disk.

In addition, strong magnetic fields, such as those generated by your computer display, audio speakers, magnets, transformers or large motors, ballasts in fluorescent desk lights, and transformers in the bases of high intensity lamps can damage disks. Keep disks at least a foot away from these items.

STORING DISKS

Store your disks in a dust-free container where the temperature will be between 50 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity between 20 and 80 percent.

LABELING DISKS

Write on the label before you put the label on the disk. If you must write on the label after it is already on the disk, use a felt tip marker.

USING DISKS

Hold the disk by its label and insert it into the specified disk drive. Guide it gently into place until it clicks into place. Do not force it.

Never open a disk drive while the red light is on over the disk drive. Never remove the disk during an operation. You may lose or damage the data on the disk and/or damage the disk drive.
